What is photography to me?
Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated by the visual, by the image.
I have used photography to discover the world around me, as a form of documentation, and as a way to create new worlds and preserve old ones. The way I have done that -and still do- is more intuitive than artistic.
Today, I struggle to find my way between fine art and commercial photography, trying to balance what I see with what others want to see.
I compare myself to other photographers who create beautiful series, hold exhibitions, publish photography books, maintain archives, photograph with a clear purpose and have a story to tell.
I question my photography and try to redefine its role in my practice, now also in relation to film. I want photography to be light-weighted and spontaneous, without always having to focus on what the image is going to become.
In the end, photography, for me, is a way of meeting the other, it is an action. And through others, as if looking into a mirror, I meet myself.
The portrait of the lady above was made on a very hot day. She allowed me to look at her for a few moments and followed my instructions. She trusted me. I didn’t know her, a long chain of circumstances brought us into the same room that day. I will probably never see her again, yet she gave me something of herself.
Photography, beyond seeing, is also about embracing the unpredictable. And when that moment arrives, I can’t do anything else than take the photograph.

ANNE & Summer Fruits, from the Fine Art Photography series Chalk & Charcoal
These two photographs are part of a series of black-and-white images that has been running parallel to my artistic practice for almost ten years. The series is called Chalk & Charcoal and consists of monochrome photographs in which I explore the boundaries of photography and the art of the image. I experiment with the images by continuously adding new layers to them, until they are almost no longer recognisable as photographs.
For me, these layers also symbolise time. How do you capture time? Photography, by its very nature, captures a moment in time, but how can I also make time tangible within the image itself?
The photographs are often portraits, still lifes and landscapes: classical subjects from painting and photography that add another layer of meaning to what an image can represent. For the portraits, I often choose people who have something timeless or classical about them; faces that could just as easily have come from Greece (the country of my origin, where I lived until I was seventeen, and a country I look back on with nostalgia).

SEQUENCES, ongoing photography series
Sequences is an ongoing photographic project that develops intuitively through an open and spontaneous way of looking at everyday life. Each photograph grows out of the previous one, creating connections through colour, form, texture and atmosphere. Rather than documenting specific moments or places, the project explores the unexpected compositions that emerge when we pay attention to the ordinary.
