THE IN-BETWEEN
The idea of the in-between exists in my mind for a long time. It started when I was studying at the art academy in Maastricht (NL). There, I first developed the concept of The Undetermined, referring to things that are either un-definable or cannot be conceived by the human mind and modern culture. The Undetermined had a close connection to what many cultures call God. Therefore, many of my works were approached from a religious or theological point of view. One of the reasons for this was the presence of Orthodox religion during my upbringing in the countryside of Greece.
When I finished my studies in 2020, I moved back to Greece and worked on a project about the chapels in the area. For this project, I documented and researched 32 chapels located in and around the villages of Miliés, Vyzitsa, and Pinakates. In their essence, chapels have little to do with institutional religion but reflected the human need for a personal moment of connection and prayer. This connection and prayer are different for everyone, and the small, intimate space of the chapel helps in achieving that. Chapels are doorways to the in-between, even if I back then named the project Faithkeepers, a title that holds both a positive and a critical meaning.
After that, I slowly moved away from referencing religion and theology directly in my work. Through the years, I noticed that my work continued to reach for something that could not be defined and this is not necessarily religious, not even exactly spiritual or supernatural.
Over the past year, the idea of the in-between has become clearer. The in-between is a space within dualities (Life/Death: In the Christian tradition, when someone dies, it takes forty days for the soul to settle into its new state (to reach heaven). During that time, it wanders, this could be understood as the in-between space). To be within these dualities, flow is necessary. (Flow as in ροή (rhoi), from the Greek panta rhei — “everything flows, nothing stays.”)
The in-between space is open. It’s not even a space in the traditional sense, it is the in-between: a state of change.
For something to be changing, time is necessary; therefore, time also plays a significant role in shaping this idea.
In my work, the in-between (space) is depicted through nature, liminal spaces, decay (everything carries death within it), time, and melancholy. Although I often use portraits to embody the feeling of the in-between, I ask myself:
Can the human be the center of the in-between? Or is the human just a single-dimensional perceiver?

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The in-between space (dutch: TUSSENRUIMTE), a solo show by Louisa Vergozisi at the former CITY Cinema.

From people and places to liminal states, Louisa Vergozisi captures the
space in-between. Living in The Netherlands and in Greece, her work brings together photographs, video works, objects and the paradoxes of time.
An open look at the in-between, the space where things meet each other.
